Nancy J. Karlin, Ph.D.
As a professor in the School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Northern Colorado, I have specific interests in familial caregiving of Alzheimer's disease patients and professional caregiving of the aging patient. For almost 30 years, I have conducted a program of research devoted to understanding both the familial caregiver and issues relating to care of the chronically ill. This program of research sought to identify how Hispanic families provide care to older family members who have Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. This research looked at the needs of Hispanic caregiver families not being met. I also examined service use disparities between Hispanic and non-Hispanic White caregivers, the role of acculturation, and spiritual relevance prior, during, and after the care process. Recent research has considered cross-national aging experiences in nine countries (Thailand, Botswana, Italy, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, China, Japan, and the United States).
